I know! This is a really early November letter right on the heels of October! And it’s a first in more than one way.
I had the feeling that my last couple correspondences were maybe a bit heeeaavvy. Being in school sorta ramps up that side of me— so to chill it out a bit, I thought I might share some of the things I’ve been pulling together and apart in my studio.
None of what I reveal here is actually ready to show, especially in cyberspace— so this is also a first and another kind of experiment. I have to be cautious that I don’t give away too much too early because sometimes work loses its momentum when I do that. When that happens, it’s as if the force behind the work gets miffed and says, “Hey, I thought it was just us”— and then breaks up with me.
Also, you may at some things wonder, “what the hell is that?” Feel free to imagine me happily responding with, “Beats me.” I rarely have any coherent idea of what I’m making until years have past and that’s how I like it (although, not the most ideal when grant writing). More on that in a future letter:)
The above three works involve cutting an image out of one side of the page and then pasting it into the image on the back side (hence the mirror negative space).
In the past, I had placed a rule on myself to avoid making drawings and paintings because I had too much conditioning that interfered with my spontaneity there. The part of me that wanted to fix everything and doubted every mysterious or unrefined mark was a big problem. But lately, those kind of inner voices have hushed-up enough that I’ve been able to enjoy working on paper without holding-back.
I’m in a group show in a couple of weeks and who knows what will make it in there— I’ll reveal that soon!
